  Our mission is to Enable a Unified Cultural Awakening by making the Arts Accessible and Affordable for the entire community.


 

 El Comite Cultural del Pueblo, Inc. Was founded in 1980 when a group of parents met to discuss the young people of Del Rio, their problems in school and the lack of meaningful activities for them. At these meetings the idea was developed to establish a cultural arts organization which would promote the appreciation of Mexican-American culture and better the community through cultural and educational activities. In teaching our children the beauty of our culture, we reinforce their self-esteem. The lack of self-esteem seemed to be a problem leading to lack of achievement in school, dropping-out, drug use, teen pregnancy and delinquency. By providing culturally enriching activities, we occupy their time and it gives us an opportunity to counsel troubled youth. Every instructor is made aware of our purposes and is committed to them as well as to his or her art form.

El Comité enlarged its board members and amended its bylaws to reflect the changes necessary to operate the Casa De La Cultura. We initiated a program of art and literacy classes beginning in May of 1993. We hired a director and actively seek funds through grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts,Val Verde Community Foundation and others.
